This weekend’s NWFL Under 18 Real Mates Colts Grand Final between Penguin and Devonport will see the region’s best young footballers battle it out for the premiership, while championing a simple, but important road safety message – Real Mates look out for each other and help each other get home safely.
Now in its sixth year, the partnership between the Road Safety Advisory Council (RSAC) and the North West Football League (NWFL) is helping reach young Tasmanians as they begin, or are in the early stages of, their driving journey.
The Real Mates program includes the Bro Code campaign, which encourages young people to plan ahead for a safe way home when drinking, look out for their mates and make sure no one takes an unnecessary risk on the road. With many players either learning to drive or recently obtaining their licence, the program provides an opportunity to promote safe road behaviours at a stage where lifelong driving habits are being formed.
“Local football clubs play an important role in shaping youth both on and off the field, making them an ideal setting to encourage positive attitudes towards road safety, responsibility, and looking out for others.” said RSAC Chair, Scott Tilyard.
“The earlier we can get young people thinking about road safety and making safe choices, the better. Real Mates puts that message into terms young people can relate to and act on.”
As part of the competition clubs nominate a player who demonstrates genuine mateship, leadership and respect, with two Real Mates awards presented following this weekend’s grand final.
“The Real Mates award celebrates individuals who show an exceptional commitment to being a true mate, both on and off the field.” said Mr Tilyard
“It recognises their contribution to their club, their teammates, and the broader community, while reinforcing the importance of looking out for others and making safe choices.”
NWFL Competition Manager Kathy Brotherton said Real Mates builds on the strong culture of mateship already at the heart of local football.
“Looking after your mates doesn’t stop when you leave the field,” Ms Brotherton said.
“Whether you’re driving, riding, walking or a passenger, we want our young players to make safe choices and encourage their mates to do the same.
“The Real Mates program helps make road safety part of the conversation within our clubs and gives young people a message they can put into practice every day.”
