Driving to the conditions
Different Day, Different Drive
Drive to the conditions. Every time. Tasmania’s road conditions can change in an instant - and so should your driving.

Our new campaign, Different Day, Different Drive, is a timely reminder that “drive to the conditions” isn’t just a slogan – it’s a life-saving habit.

Whether it’s sun glare, heavy rain, icy patches, traffic build-up or wildlife crossing at dusk, every day brings different hazards. What felt like a safe road yesterday could be a real risk today.

Why this campaign matters

Driving too fast for the conditions is a major contributor to serious crashes on Tasmanian roads.

While many people assume road trauma is caused by reckless or illegal driving, the reality is that most serious crashes involve everyday drivers making everyday mistakes – especially when conditions change unexpectedly.

In Tasmania, road conditions can shift in an instant. Rain, ice, low light, glare, traffic build-up, or wildlife on the road all demand a quick and careful response.

Too often, people stick to the speed limit thinking they’re driving safely – but the limit is not a target. If the road feels different today, your driving should be different too.

Speed isn’t just about the limit

Many serious crashes aren’t caused by drivers breaking the speed limit. They happen because people are driving too fast for the conditions.

If the road is wet, icy, unfamiliar, or visibility is poor – then the safe speed is often well below the posted limit.

This campaign asks all drivers to rethink what it means to drive safely.

What we’re asking

Adaptive driving should be second nature. That means:

  • Slow down when roads are wet, icy or unpredictable
  • Leave extra space between you and the car in front
  • Use headlights in rain, fog, or low light
  • Watch for wildlife, especially around dawn and dusk
  • Be aware of sun glare and use sun visors or sunglasses
  • Keep your focus – avoid distractions and drive with both hands on the wheel
  • Anticipate hazards and adjust early

Every journey is different. Stay alert. Stay flexible. Drive to the conditions – and help make sure everyone gets home safely.
